What Do I Say?

What Do I Say?
By Steve Smith

In our warehouse at work we have a voice activated order picking system. It directs you to the location you are to pick product from, you say the part of the UPC as a check digit, it tells you how many to pick and then you confirm it. It then tells you the next location to go to and pick from.

I don’t think I am the only one who gets confused sometimes as to which location I was suppose to be going to, how many I am suppose to pick or if I even said the check digit to activate the system.

The cool part about the system is that when this happens I simply say “What do I say?” It automatically lets you know where you left off and what to say next in order to continue on with the process.

I don’t think I am the only one who feels this way when having a spiritual conversation with someone. Ever feel like you don’t know what to say next to someone when trying to share Jesus with them? You are not alone, I have many, many times. Look at what Jesus says about these situations speaking to the crowd in Luke 12:8-12:

“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

When we are in situations like this and struggling with what to say we can in our hearts be saying all the time to the Holy Spirit “What do I say?” And Jesus promises He will tell us! We may not be hauled before the courts or rulers yet in this country but in many places around the world they are. Yet the truth and the principles apply in our neighborhoods, offices, factories, schools and stores where we spend our time.

A few years ago I was picking up salt and speaking with another truck driver on the loading dock about the Gospel, he grabbed the cross necklace I had on and twisted it around my neck nearly choking me and asked, “so what is this then?” Believe me, I was asking myself, “What do I say, what do I say, what do I say?!” And out of my mouth came “It is a price tag.” I literally thought the guy was going to punch my lights out as he stared at me. He dropped the necklace, let me go and walked away. Man was I ever relieved!

As I stood there I wondered where that statement came from out of my mouth. The passage in Luke 12 explains that, the Holy Spirit told me what to say. It is something I am asking during conversations to be led to the right words to say all the time.

At work I am asking the picking system what do I say pretty often to get on track. And at work and other places asking the Holy Spirit what do I say will keep us on track in our efforts to share Jesus with others!
